The ruckus of media over Sushant Singh Rajput’s mysterious demise

With Rhea Chakraborty at the helm of it, the mysterious demise of Sushant Singh Rajput is the only focal point for the Indian mainstream media leaving behind the unfeigned issues of deadly covid-19 pandemic, economic distress, job losses and so on. Although, Rhea continues to be accused number one for the central investigative agencies but in the eyes of special bench of TV media she is already a guilty, paving a way to new low for Indian Journalism.

It has been almost 3 months since the unfortunate demise of star actor Sushant Singh Rajput on 14 June. In between the days, various conspiracy theories came up accusing Rhea for her allegedly role in Sushant’s demise.

The FIR registered by Sushant’s father accusing Rhea didn’t deal with murder in specific, rather talks about abetment to suicide. However, the FIR points out serious charges on her and accusing her of grabbing all of Sushant’s wealth.

Since the demise of actor, we the audience were being made scapegoat. In every sense, we supported Rhea’s media trail by playing TV channels in our homes filled with yellow Journalism along the periphery of sensationalism. We kept on watching and they didn’t disappoint us. Maybe for the sake of TRPs.

The widening of trail and series of theories peddled by media such as nepotism, loopholes in post mortem report, silence of big b-town stars diverting us not only from the real sense of reporting in Sushant’s case but also from prevailing crises of covid-19 pandemic, border tensions at LAC, job loss for at least 21 million salaried workers, drastic floods bashes parts of Eastern Vidarbha and the list goes on.

It is neither the first nor the last media trail carried out by the special bench of TV Journalists, mark my words. We have seen many examples in past as well. Right from the 2002 Gujarat riots, post Godhra train tragedy, where Indian media headed by the swarms of few so-called flagbearers of Journalism unanimously declared then chief minister Narendra Modi as the main culprit and guilty for killing thousands of Muslims without caring for what Judiciary has to say in it to the unethical way of deciding parent’s as culprit in the Aarushi Talwar-Hemraj double murder case in Noida.

Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB)

Rhea Chakraborty is in custody of Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB). She has been arrested till September 22 for her alleged role in drugs procurement linked to the mysterious death of Sushant Singh Rajput.

This is our collective fault, first as a viewer then as responsible citizen for giving media trail a scope which now begins at 9 am and continued till 11 pm. The several channels climbed up new heights by falling in the trap of yellow Journalism. Today, they achieved TRPs by trivialising the genuine prevailing concerns by losing moral conscience under the banner of ‘Investigative Journalism’. Indian media, meanwhile, must stop their own trail and should cover the case with an ethical angle only.

One has rightly pointed out that “the presumption of innocence until proven guilty is a cardinal principle of criminal justice”. We should let central agencies to do their work. Arrests are being made on daily basis. They are getting inch-closer day-by-day. Justice shall prevail.
